Farewell, Grandma

Grandma Balest passed away on Thursday, August 26, after living a full life of 87 years. We've spent the past few days reminiscing about and celebrating her life.

UK fans to be rewarded this fall

"You will be rewarded this year with a lot better football team," Brooks said.

"Hahahahahahahahaha!" Chuck said.

Bush's problem with blacks is more than skin deep

He doesn't hate black people. He hates poor people. Unless they are dumb enough to get riled up enough about his social agenda to vote against their own economic interests.

(Note: I'm not a regular reader of this blog, but the NY Times doesn't post columns for public access and this site looked like fun.)

Diplomacy Bush-style is survival of the stubborn

Well, that just about sums up what's wrong with W.

Program teaches children songs, words to persuade family members to quit

This woman is my new hero.

"So Blockmon created songs for children to sing every time someone lit a cigarette in their presence. At Schrader Lane Childcare Center, she sang her song to the tune of "Three Blind Mice" with the students who were mostly 3 to 6 years old.

I won't smoke. I won't smoke; When I grow up I won't smoke; It'll make you choke (cough). It'll make you choke (cough); When I grow up I won't smoke.

The kids loved it, especially the coughing part."

Wonder how many kids will get smacked for that one....

Fletcher takes beating in GOP poll

"69% would prefer someone else as governor."

Modern medicine won't save this patient. Maybe you're praying for a miracle.

Non-Errors

"Those usages people keep telling you are wrong but which are actually standard in English."

I suppose, for some of these, it depends on how you define "standard", which the author conveniently does on the main page of Common Errors in English. Strong arguments for all, though, and quite a few insights. I highly recommmend spending some quality time with these frequently amusing pages. Prof. Brians has a dry humor clearly shaped by years of reading undergraduate papers.

Faith, race and Barack Obama

"Democracy demands that the religiously motivated translate their concerns into universal, rather than religion-specific, values. It requires that their proposals be subject to argument, and amenable to reason. If I am opposed to abortion for religious reasons but seek to pass a law banning the practice, I cannot simply point to the teachings of my church. I have to explain why abortion violates some principle that is accessible to people of all faiths, including those with no faith at all."

Thinking like this is why I like Barack Obama.

Find some background in this opinion from the Eonomist.

Fletcher faces doubt within party

"We're talking about a man who's no longer worthy of our support because of his stubbornness to not listen to sound advice and who makes the worst choice every time.... Performance is a Republican value and that hasn't happened here. His performance in office and the persistent political missteps, I believe, are harming the party."

Others in the party start to see the light. When will Fletcher? His track record says "never."

Cutting the noise

When did Lexington become a gated community? The relentless barking of a neighbor's uncontrolled dog is definitely worth addressing, but this proposed measure seems a bit overbearing.

New report attacks all passive smoking

"Second-hand smoke kills people and the only way to control it is to ban all smoking in workplaces."

What more do you need to know?
